17 heat records shattered across the Japan in One Day

Date:

Tokyo, August 1 — Japan experienced its highest-ever recorded temperature on July 30, with the mercury hitting a scorching 41.2°C (106°F) in the western Hyogo region, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The unprecedented heat is part of a wider, alarming pattern, as 17 heat records were shattered across the country on Monday alone.

The central city of Komatsu, located in Ishikawa Prefecture, recorded a sweltering 40.3°C, while Toyama City reached 39.8°C, both setting all-time highs. In total, 15 other cities and towns across Japan reported record-breaking temperatures ranging between 35.7°C and 39.8°C, the JMA confirmed.

This extreme heat follows Japan’s hottest June and July since records began in 1898, and experts warn that the trend is intensifying due to human-driven climate change.

The early end of the rainy season—about three weeks ahead of schedule in Japan’s western regions—has further exacerbated the crisis. The Land Ministry reported that several dams in northern Japan are nearly dry, raising concerns of a looming water shortage and potential damage to agricultural output.

Climate change is also visibly impacting Japan’s cherished natural landmarks. The iconic cherry blossoms are blooming earlier—or failing to bloom fully—due to warmer autumns and milder winters. Last year, Mount Fuji’s snowcap appeared in November—the latest on record, compared to its usual debut in early October.

The JMA has warned of continued “severe heat” in the coming months. Globally, Asia ranks among the fastest-warming continents, second only to Europe, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

As temperatures soar and ecological markers shift, Japan is facing urgent calls for climate adaptation and mitigation to combat the accelerating threat of extreme heat.
